The backgammon history begins thousands of years ago. There are remains from 3000-1700 BC that indicate that humanity was using a version of the game already then. Considering the tools discovered were a board and checkers, historians believe that it was the first version of backgammon in history. These remains were probably created in ancient Egypt in 3000 BC and the name for backgammon then was 'Senat' or 'The game of thirty squares'. The roll of the dice and the rules of that game are unknown to us. Later, in 2600-1700 BC, the game became popular within the culture of the Sumers in Mesopotamia, during the Persian Empire.

Backgammon history continued during the time of the Roman Empire, which began in 1st BC, people were playing a game called 'Ludus doudecim scriptorum'' that means twelve lines. This game was probably a version of the 'Senat' game (mentioned above), and later the game was replaced by the 'Tabula' game (means table board game), which rules resemble more to the contemporary backgammon rules. The 'Tabula' has an important meaning in backgammon history the developing of the game, and the reasons for this are that this was the first game to be played with real money. It was accustomed to gamble on the game. Furthermore, the backgammon history was written then for the first time in a book. Unfortunately the book didn’t survive.

At the time, gambling prohibitions were applied, but in the 6th century AD a new game with the name 'Alea' became popular (the meaning of the name is gambling with dice) and not long after the 'Alea', a similar game, that carried the name of 'Nard', began to become popular in Persia.

In the 11th century AD, backgammon began to become popular in England and, at the same time, in other countries in the world; some of them were: Germany, Czech, France, Italy, China, Turkey, Greece and Spain. The name of backgammon varied according to the cultures. The term 'backgammon' as a name of a game, was created by the Englishmen in 1645. The term 'backgammon' probably derives from the Saxon language and investigators assume that the meaning of it is 'back game'.

It didn’t take long before backgammon began to be spread over Asia and Europe, and today we consider backgammon the most geographically widespread board game that has ever existed. There were many versions of backgammon in the course of history, many still being created, and lots of books can be written about it. However, the purpose of this review is to introduce the most important events that had an influence on the contemporary game, and to give you an idea about the magnificent past of backgammon. In addition, from the moment the term 'Backgammon' was first created, and until it became an internet game, there were many changes and influences; you can read more about them in the article internet backgammon.
