The Backgammon Rule
The 'Backgammon Rule' is becoming very popular today in the world, even though not everyone plays according the rule. Before starting a game of
backgammon
, both sides need to agree of using the rule. This rule gives you the option of doubling or tripling your stake, in case you won the game, of course.
The rule is relevant in two situations:
1. Gammon: if you won the backgammon game and your partner didn’t succeed to bear off any of his checkers, your stake will be doubled.
2. Backgammon: if you won the backgammon game and your partner didn’t succeed to bear off any one of his checkers and at least one of his checkers is still in your home, your stake will be tripled.
One of the good example where the rule is not applied is in Greece, where they play Tavli
. The equivalent of backgammon in Tavli is 'Portes', that is much like backgammon but without gammons and backgammons.
