The real money backgammon game became popular thousands of years ago. In the Roman Empire people were playing backgammon for money. In the time of Claudius Caesar (around 50 AD) the game became even more popular, because of the passion of Claudius for the backgammon game. The 'Tabula' game was the kind of backgammon played back then with real money.
Playing backgammon for money became more popular among the Romans in the Empire Period and in some stage it was announced as an illegal game. Only in the Saturnalia Feast (which took a place once in a year and lasted for a week) people were allowed to play for real money; those who didn't obey to the law, paid a fine that was more than three times higher from the total stake.
In the course of history, backgammon for money was played in many countries and in many periods it was illegal to play for real money. In England, for example, backgammon for money was very popular during the Middle Ages, and was outlawed for a while, until Queen Elizabeth the First made backgammon for money to become a legal game.
